Where Light Breaks Through

Updated: Mar 9

Sunset over ocean with vibrant orange and red sky. Sun partially hidden by horizon, casting a warm, serene glow. Clouds enhance scene.

Today, I came across an audio clip of a police officer’s confession.

He, together with other officers, had been ordered to shoot at people in a peaceful demonstration. What he witnessed was something rare: The raw essence of humanity

a quiet miracle that still lives within us, though often seems dormant these days.

As the command was given to unleash fire on civilians, something extraordinary happened. A group of young, strong men and women moved to the very front of the crowd. They stood shoulder to shoulder, held hands, and formed a living human line of defense. Their voices rose – not in violence, but in chants of hope.

The bullets came.

They were hit.

Yet they did not retreat.

They did not kneel.

They did not turn back.

Instead, they kept protecting those behind them. Their bodies became living shields, allowing the justice movement to move forward without fear. They remained standing so the voices of the innocent could rise beyond the sound of bullets.

In that moment, the officer recounting the story fell silent. Fighting back tears, he lowered his voice and whispered: "They transformed into symbols of courage, hope, and ultimate sacrifice and that’s when I was shaken awake."

And I thought to myself; What a strange and profound paradox he had witnessed.

Life and death standing face to face.

One soul offering itself for a fellow compatriot, while another pulls the trigger.

Fearless compassion blooming in the presence of violence.

It is like the light of God has made a piece of heaven visible in the heart of hell.

It reminded me of Shams ’s response to Rumi 's question: "What about our wounds?"

" The wound is the place where the Light enters you."

This is, in fact, what has been happening recently in my country. Let me give you a glimpse:

A corrupt government,

oppression,

downfall of a potentially booming economy,

hyperinflation,

world’s weakest currency,

rage and frustration of the people,

demonstrations,

aggressive suppression,

internet blackout,

guns and blood,

fear,

forceful silence,

thousands of families in mourning,

frustration and hatred.

And add environmental destruction, droughts, and death of ancient religious beliefs to the mis and there you have my country’s heartbeat.

On the bright side, the hardship has given birth to the most extraordinary unity – one that will reshape history. We have grown to be a nation with one message and one heartbeat despite every attempt to divide us. And now, that long-earned maturity is bearing fruit. Now my nation is wide awake. It is ready to stand fearlessly tall for what is rightfully ours, a safe home, a flourishing country with flowing rivers, green trees, clean air, and joyful hearts.

It is heartbreaking to see the gradual weakening of your beloved’s wealth and beliefs.

It is invigorating to witness your people go through fire and blood and hatred, to watch passionate demonstrators who have nothing but their voice, forced to fight with their life at stake – and lose.

It is maddening to see your own people in military uniform silencing their brothers and sisters with brutal force while they stand unarmed, with their hopeful hearts, asking them to join the nation.

And it will be liberating to see that the country’s soul will rise again like the phoenix out of the ashes as one united country destined for glory.

Iran, historically known as Persia, stands as a cradle of civilization, a land that nurtured Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi, Avicenna, and Zakaria Razi, whose art, science, architecture, and philosophy influenced cultures across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.

Whether called Iran or Persia, the identity remains the same:

A civilization rooted in wisdom, tolerance, creativity, and intellectual depth  – one that has shaped human history in ways that still echo today.

Now, after 47 years of suffering, my country finds itself witnessing yet another war. On one hand, it offers a fragile glimpse of hope, perhaps the possibility of change. On the other, it brings deep sorrow as destruction continues to unfold across the land.

It is a strange and painful moment for my people to live in the uneasy space between immense hope and profound grief. To long for liberation by the very force that darkens your skies and strikes you and yet, may be the only one capable of setting you free.

And perhaps even more difficult is the uncertainty that hangs over everything -

The not knowing.

Will this war finally bring the long-awaited peace? Or, if it ends in vain, will our nation be left with a shattered land and a wounded regime ready to ignite the fires of revenge?

Only God knows.

So here I am, writing to you about a revolution shaping in the minds and hearts of 90 million people though words cannot do justice to the injustice flowing in the veins of a bleeding country.

Words are simply incapable of describing the bitterness and sadness of thousands and thousands of families who had unfairly and brutally lost a child, a mother, a father, a sister, a brother. At the same time, words seem like the least I can do to be however small part of a nation’s voice to be heard above the borders.

What is unraveling in my country is the story of humanity, hope, and bravery.

It is the story of a seed growing no matter how many times it is pulled out.

It is about the rebirth of a nation as old as Cyrus the Great, and as ancient as the Silk Road.

It is unbearably hard to see the light now in the darkest acts of brutality and indifference as it is impossible for a mother to find beauty in the wounds of her child.

But I keep reminding myself that It is also impossible to see the full, colorful beauty of a rainbow while standing inside it.

Only with distance, patience, and a faithful heart can one step back and begin to glimpse at the pattern the universe is weaving, unknown to us mortals now, but perhaps mercifully designed for the days ahead.

May that day of light come soon for each and every one of us.

And may we once again look upon a free and glorious Iran – with pride, relief, and peace.
